The model that gave the ultimate «starting shot» in the small family premium segment is back. The new Audi A3 Sportback appears in 2020 in its 4th generation — internally dubbed the 8Y generation — with the promise of continuing the successful path of its predecessors.
In total, the Audi A3 has sold over 5 million units worldwide. In Portugal alone, there were more than 50 thousand units since the first generation (8L).

And now that this model has started its commercial career in Portugal, the brand has just announced the prices and equipment list of all versions available for our country in the first phase of launch.
Later, sportier versions will appear — S and RS — and also the remaining electrified versions, which should play a central role within the Audi A3 range. We remind you that Audi Portugal wants to be, in the words of its managing director Alberto Godinho, “the leading premium brand in electrification in Portugal”.
More equipment and better engines. The same price
Although the new Audi A3 (8Y generation) represents a huge evolution in terms of technology and design compared to the previous generation, this evolution “will not be reflected in the price”, explained Ricardo Tomaz, responsible for the brand's communication in Portugal.
Prices similar to the previous generation, despite the important "upgrade" that the new Audi A3 received in the 30 TDI version. The former 1.6 liter diesel engine ceased to function and gave way to a 116 hp version of the 2.0 liter diesel engine from the German group.
As for the rest of the engine range, at launch, the new Audi A3 Sportback is available on the domestic market with a choice of two petrol engines – 1.0 TFSI 110 hp and 1.5 TFSI 150 hp – and a turbodiesel unit with two power levels: 2.0 TDI with 116 hp and 150 hp.
The 35 TFSI S tronic engine uses mild hybrid technology, which uses a 48 V electrical system with a compact lithium-ion battery. Energy recovery can reach 12 kW, being generated in situations of deceleration and soft braking. The stored energy allows the engine to be turned off for up to 40 seconds.
Equipment levels of the new Audi A3
In terms of equipment, the Audi A3 range will have four levels: Base, Design Selection, S Line and Edition One.
At the base level, the automatic air conditioning, the 10.1-inch MMI screen and the multi-function sports steering wheel plus, with 3 spokes, stand out.
At the Design Selection level, Torsion fabric/synthetic leather upholstery with contrasting stitching; contour and ambient lighting package with customizable shades; door sill trims, in aluminum at the front; roof lining in platinum grey; aluminum interior fittings; front center armrest; gearshift lever lining with contrasting stitching.
The sportiest equipment is reserved for the S line level: sporty front seats with integrated head restraints; upholstery with a combination of Pulse fabric and faux leather, with contrasting stitching and inlaid S logo; decorative inserts: highlight surfaces with matte brushed aluminum paint; door sill moldings (aluminum front, illuminated with S logo); black roof lining; pedals and left footrest with stainless steel finish; S logo embedded in the front seats and steering wheel.
For the launch of new models, Audi traditionally prepares the Edition one package with
strong focus on design. This package further highlights the lines of the new Audi A3 thanks to elements such as special larger wheels.
