Mandatory inspections for motorcycles in 2023? The European Union "points" in this direction

Anonim

Long planned but not implemented in mainland Portugal (in the Azores periodic inspections of motorcycles and mopeds are already mandatory), mandatory periodic inspections for motorcycles should become mandatory throughout the European Union as from 2023.

The Ministry of Transport of Europe (MOT) will be preparing a decree which will not only impose the mandatory nature of these inspections, but will also establish the parameters to be inspected and, of course, the date of entry into force of this standard.

After the European Ministry of Transport recently stated that these inspections would not arrive in 2022, it is also clear that the Federation of the European Motorcyclists Association (FEMA) should not join the European Ministry of Transport in a supporting role (something). which he offered to do), with the confirmation of this separation to come after a meeting between the Directorate General for Energy and Climate (DGEC) and FEMA.

The noise of the exhausts should be “in the sights” of the inspectors.

What to expect from these inspections

For now, little is known about these mandatory periodic inspections for motorcycles, and it is not certain whether they will cover all displacement and power ranges. If you remember, the first time the subject was discussed in Portugal, the idea would only be to oblige motorcycles with an engine capacity equal to or greater than 250 cm3 to be inspected.

However, there are rumors that the European Parliament intends to extend these inspections to all two- and three-wheel vehicles, regardless of engine capacity. If this is confirmed, even mopeds with an engine capacity of up to 50 cm3 will have to be tested in inspections.

Not even the famous "125" should be "immune" to inspections.

As for what will be evaluated, once again there is still no concrete information. Even so, these inspections should include a visual inspection of the tires, lights, brakes (which can also be tested in the phrenometer (where the car's brakes are tested). The pollutant emissions and exhaust noise tests should also be present.

For the time being, the frequency of these inspections has not yet been revealed or their price. The first time this hypothesis was addressed, in 2018, the Institute for Mobility and Transport (IMT) set the price of these inspections at 12.74 euros. In the Azores these cost 23.45 euros, dropping to 8.31 euros in the case of motor cycles and mopeds.
