Absolute record. More than 345,000 vehicles were produced in Portugal in 2019

Totaling the categories of vehicles produced and assembled in our country, nearly 346 thousand units were produced in 2019 (345 688, more precisely), which represents a 17.4% growth in automobile production in Portugal compared to 2018 and a record number in our country, according to ACAP – Associação Automóvel de Portugal, “the best year in the history of the national automobile industry”.

The production and assembly of motor vehicles in Portugal reached 282 142 units ( passenger cars ), with a positive variation of 20.5%.

Already regarding light commercials , 58,141 units were produced between January and December 2019, which represents a positive variation of 5.9% compared to 2018.

The production of Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo in Mangualde helped set the new record.

As for the heavy produced in Portugal, 5,405 heavy vehicles were made in our country, and this number is also 1.3% higher than 2018.

The data advanced by ACAP also says that 97.3% of vehicles manufactured in Portugal are destined for the foreign market , hence its significant and important contribution to the Portuguese trade balance.

Europe is the leading export market for vehicles produced in Portugal (92.7%), being the Germany the main “customer” (23.3%), followed by France (15.5%), Italy (13.3%), Spain (11.1%) and United Kingdom (8.7%) to close the Top 5 of the main importers of vehicles produced in the national territory.

Volkswagen T-Roc
The Volkswagen T-Roc is the latest model produced at the AutoEuropa plant in Palmela.

To export performance , and similarly to the figures presented a year ago, the plants of AutoEuropa (Palmela) and Grupo PSA (Mangualde) were the ones that contributed the most to national production. By factories , here are the production values:

  1. AutoEurope : 256 878 units (+16.3% compared to 2018)
  2. PSA Group : 77 606 units (+23.0% compared to 2018)
  3. Mitsubishi Fuso Truck Europe : 3,406 light commercial vehicles (+16.5% compared to 2018) and 5389 heavy commercial vehicles, with this number representing an increase of 1.5% compared to the previous year
  4. Toyota Catean : 2393 units (+13.2%)

looking at the brands that produce passenger cars in our country, here is their performance:

  1. Volkswagen : 233 857 units (+16.2%)
  2. SEAT : 23 021 units (+17.5%)
  3. citron : 14 831 units (+134.0%)
  4. Peugeot : 9914 units (+43.9%)
  5. opel : 519 units

It should also be noted that in 2019, 267 828 cars were sold in Portugal, some of which were produced in Portugal, which says that the production achieved this year surpassed sales by 77 860 units, confirms ACAP.
