Volkswagen ID.5. ID.4's sportiest "brother" arrives later this year

The future Volkswagen ID.5 was caught in winter testing a few months away from his official unveiling. When it arrives, it will complement the already commercialized ID.4, sacrificing its practicality a little for an additional dose of style, highlighted by its more arched roof line.

The sportier looking SUV/Crossover variants that many brands insist on calling (wrongly) a coupé are in “fashion”. Predictably, it's not because they become exclusively electric that this trend towards having a sportier looking variant would disappear, as the ID.5 shows.

The future Volkswagen ID.5, however, had already been anticipated several years ago. In 2017 we saw the unveiling of the concept ID. Crozz and it's easy to see how close it was, visually, to the production model. Compare the images:

The ID Crozz was equipped with two electric motors - one per axle - which, in total, delivered 306 hp of power. An option that will be part of the several planned for the ID.5 and that should be chosen to embody the higher-performance version of this electric crossover, called GTX.

The remaining options will be shared with “brother” ID.4. Namely the option of just a rear engine and 204 hp, combined with the 77 kWh battery; and most likely the 170 hp option combined with the smaller 52 kWh battery.

If the exterior of the ID.5 will be different from the ID.4, the same cannot be said in relation to its interior that it must be fundamentally the same, with the exception of the interior decoration.

It now remains to wait for the second half of 2021 to discover, without any camouflage, the new Volkswagen ID.5. Given its proximity to ID.4, it will be produced together with this one in Zickau, Germany, where ID.3 is also produced.
