It can be difficult to pay attention to the arrival of the most accessible version in the nowhere accessible. Mercedes-AMG GT when in recent weeks all attention has been focused on its most extreme variant.

The GT Black Series is a serious case of steroids in an automobile form. It belongs to the most powerful version (so far) of the roaring 4.0 V8 twin turbo — it went from 585 hp in the R to a more substantial 730 hp — and brings aerodynamic apparatus worthy of a competition car.

All the extremism of this version is reflected in the price — as you can imagine, it's not the most affordable at all, but truth be told, none of the GT's are.

We recently learned that in Germany, its home market, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series would be priced from 335 240 euros . It's more than double what a GT R costs there, the version immediately below which we classified, when we tested it, as “car abuse” — remember that video…

In Portugal, with our taxation? Of course the price would have to be higher. In our planted waterfront rectangle, the GT Black Series has a price starting at… 410 900 euros . More than 75 thousand euros in taxes when compared to Germany. And it's just the “beginning of the conversation”, as we haven't “dipped into” the costly and even desirable options yet.

Mercedes-AMG GT… “base”

Well, luckily there are more affordable options among the GT, with a new level of access to the German sports car. If before the range was organized as GT, GT S, GT C and GT R, now the GT S disappears from the catalog, with the new “base” GT taking its place.

Thus, the Mercedes-AMG GT, available as both a coupé and a roadster, sees its power rise by 54 hp, surpassing even the previous 522 hp of the GT S, settling in the 530 hp and 670 Nm . The performance equals and also surpasses those of the previous GT S: the 100 km/h are reached in identical 3.8s, but the top speed rises from 308 km/h to 312 km/h.

The transmission continues to be made only and only to the rear wheels, through the same seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the AMG Speedshift DCT 7G.

With this "upgrade", equipment that was only found in other versions of the GT will also be available.

These include AMG Ride Control (adaptive suspension), electronic self-locking rear differential and composite brakes with calipers in red as standard. Additionally, a lithium-ion battery (lighter than the conventional battery) is also available, as well as the Race driving mode. As an option and in combination with the AMG Dynamic Plus we can also have access to the steerable rear axle.

Also, optionally, the “Night Edition” aesthetic package becomes available, the result of which can be seen in the official images that Mercedes-AMG made available and illustrate this article.

How much does it cost?

The Mercedes-AMG GT sees its price start in the 190 150 euros for the Coupé, with the Roadster starting at €209,139 — inaccessible to ordinary mortals, but it even seems affordable when you look at the price of the GT Black Series…
