Uber banned in Portugal

As of today, Uber will not be able to operate in Portugal. The Civil Court of Lisbon has already notified several entities, including the ASAE and telecommunications operators, so that compliance with the measure is ensured.

The Civil Court of Lisbon granted the injunction requested by Antral (National Association of Road Transport and Light Vehicles), which asked for the closure of the Uber service in Portugal. After other countries and a lot of controversy, the American company that competes with traditional taxi services sees the Portuguese justice close a door.

This decision obliges the “closure and prohibition in Portugal of the provision and adjudication of the passenger transport service under the name Uber”.

Uber is also obliged to close the website, application and is prohibited from receiving any type of payment made through the platform.

In a statement, Antral said that "it is with satisfaction that the Court of Lisbon gives it complete reason by issuing a sentence prohibiting, immediately, the activity of this UBER company in Portugal."

What can Uber do?

Upon approval of the measure, Uber may appeal the decision or request the replacement of the measure by a bond, the value of which must be accepted by the Court.

If the Court accepts the proposed amount, Uber may continue to operate in the national territory, until there is a final decision.

Speaking to SIC Notícias, Uber confirmed that it was not heard in the process.

Uber started its activity in San Francisco, USA. Today it is present in 140 cities and works without its own vehicles and drivers.
