A warning to all parents: never, ever, give your kids control of a shopping cart — 11 times out of 10 will result in a collision, according to “our” statistics.
Even when we remember our childhood… who never started speeding in an uncoordinated shopping cart through the supermarket aisles, or worse, through the rows of parked cars? Disaster was always around the corner… and the aisle of drinks, 50% off products, mr. Silva...
With this scenario in mind, Ford developed a shopping cart capable of avoiding the worst, by equipping it with a sensor capable of detecting people and objects, automatically braking in the event of a potential collision. Great, isn't it?
The inspiration came from the autonomous emergency braking technology (Pre-Collision Assistance) applied to its models, where a radar and a camera detect other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, alerting the driver and even automatically acting on the brakes in the event of a collision imminent.
The prototype is part of a series of solutions, Ford Interventions, which applies knowledge from the automotive field to the resolution of small everyday problems.
