First test of the new Renault Mégane Grand Coupé 1.6 dCi

Anonim

We had to wait more than a year for the arrival of the Renault Mégane Grand Coupé on the national market — a model that was presented in the already distant year of 2016. A late arrival but… was it worth the wait?

The answer to this and other questions is in the next few lines and on our newly launched YouTube channel. If you haven't subscribed yet, it's worth it.

From Lisbon to Tróia, passing through Grândola, Évora and finally the "Estrada dos Ingleses", between Vendas Novas and Canha, where I was joined by our producer Filipe Abreu and a great friend (very big indeed, as you will see in the video…) for the filming session.

If the road looks familiar, don't be surprised. If you've already followed us on YouTube, you'll know that it was on those curves that I didn't rest with the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio's 510 hp power. Ah… I miss you!

The new rear section is well done.

What's new for the Renault Mégane Grand Coupé?

Compared to the other variants of the Renault Mégane range, there is nothing new until we get to the rear. Thanks to the third volume — very well designed in my opinion — this Renault Mégane Grand Coupé even offers more luggage capacity than the estate version.

Thanks to the increase in dimensions (27.3 cm more than the hatchback version), the suitcase offers 550 liters of capacity, against 166 liters of the hatchback and 29 liters more than the truck!

In terms of legroom, we can count on an unburdened 851mm of legroom. To “fix” the head, the conversation is different. As you can see in the video, we have less head space compared to other bodies in the Renault Mégane range. Still not problematic. Unless they are more than 1.90 m tall…

The third volume, responsible for the increased suitcase capacity.

In addition to the legroom, I was also pleased with the design of the seats that comfortably accommodate two adults. If you want to arrange 3 adults, place the smallest one in the center.

From the rear seats to the front, there is nothing new compared to our “old acquaintance” Renault Mégane. Good materials, good construction and a fairly extensive equipment list.

In the front seats there is no difference.

Renault Mégane Grand Coupé range prices

There are two levels of equipment (Limited and Executive) and three engines available: 1.2 TCe (130 hp), 15 dCi (110 hp) and 1.6 dCi (130 hp). As for the double clutch box, it is only available with the 1.5 dCi engine.

1.2 TCe Limited 24 230 euros
Executive 27 230 euros
1.5 dCi Limited 27 330 euros
Executive 30 330 euros
Executive EDC 31 830 euros
1.6 dCi Executive 32 430 euros

As you can see, between the Limited equipment level and the Executive equipment level there are 3,000 euros.

Is it worth paying an extra 3000 euros for the Executive level? I honestly think it's worth it.

I say this even though the Limited equipment level is already quite satisfactory: bi-zone automatic air conditioning; hands-free card; R-Link 2 infotainment system with 7-inch display; leather steering wheel; 16-inch alloy wheels; light and rain sensors; tinted rear windows; between others.

But for another €3,000 the Executive level adds items that take on-board well-being to another level: panoramic sunroof; reading of traffic signs; electric handbrake; Full LED headlamps; 18-inch wheels; R-Link 2 infotainment system with an 8.7-inch screen; Renault Multi-Sense system; parking aid system and rear camera; leather/fabric seats; between others.

The front seats offer a good compromise between comfort and support.

The big absence from the list of standard equipment turns out to be the automatic braking system (pack safety 680 euros). As for the roadway maintenance system, that doesn't even exist. It is in these small details that you begin to notice the age of this generation of the Renault Mégane.

What about the engine?

I tested the most equipped and most powerful version of the Diesel range, namely the Renault Mégane Grand Coupé 1.6 dCi Executive. Naturally, the 130hp 1.6dCi engine is on a smooth and responsive level above the 110hp 1.5dCi.

The Renault logo prominently featured.

But from what I know of the Mégane range, the 1.5 dCi is competent enough and costs less — pause to get the calculator... — exactly 2 100 euros. A substantial value to which we must add slightly more measured consumptions in 1.5 dCi.

Fits the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, why not fit this Renault Mégane? Otherwise, the differences between the two engines are not considerable.

dynamically speaking

In dynamic terms the Renault Mégane Grand Coupé is not very different from the rest of the models in the range. It doesn't excite but it doesn't compromise either — forgetting the GT and RS versions. The behavior is predictable and the whole set strictly complies with our requests.

The multi-sense system is useful but it is not the item that justifies the option for the higher level of equipment.

When the pace picks up, the additional 27.4 cm in length of this Grand Coupé version sits down. Mainly in mass transfers, but nothing extraordinary. The focus of this model was placed on comfort.

Having to choose between comfort and sharper dynamics, Renault did well to opt for the former.
