Nissan bets on the «diet» of its vehicles

Nissan's decision for the year 2016 is to reduce the weight of its vehicles with the help of revolutionary materials.

Nissan has made something of a New Year's resolution: to reduce the weight of its vehicle range. For this purpose, it has joined a consortium of car manufacturers and research organizations in a program known as the Excellence Program for Weight Reduction.

The program intends to produce a model structure, which will make use of materials pioneered in the automotive industry – namely materials from the aerospace industry – and which will be used on the floor of future Japanese vehicles.

“The next 12 months promise to bring revolutions, not just resolutions, as our brand advances. This program is yet another demonstration of Nissan's commitment to developing the cars of the future, even today.” | David Moss, Vice President of Vehicle Design and Development, Nissan Technology Center Europe (NTCE)

In addition to the aforementioned Weight Reduction Excellence Program, Nissan also engaged in a mass reduction program for its current vehicles, which resulted in a “loss” of 90kg on the new Nissan X-Trail and 40kg on the new Nissan Qashqai.

In the end, not only will the weight of Nissan vehicles be great. The performances will naturally be better, as well as the fuel consumption which, being lower, will compensate for the growing amount of technology that will be integrated in the vehicles of the Japanese brand.
