The risk of death in road accidents among young people aged between 18 and 24 is about 30% higher than that of the rest of the population, reveals the National Road Safety Authority.

The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) presented this Tuesday the road accident statistics, alongside the launch of a program aimed at sensitizing future drivers. In all, 378 young people died in road accidents between 2010 and 2014, a number that represents 10% of the total number of fatalities.

ANSR reveals that most accidents involving young people occur between 20:00 and 8:00 in the localities, especially on weekends. Among the most frequent causes, we highlight excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, improper use of the cell phone, tiredness or fatigue and not using a seat belt.

According to Jorge Jacob, president of ANSR, about half of the accidents involving young people between 18 and 24 years old result from crashes (51%). On the other hand, statistics also indicate that Portugal occupies the third lowest place in Europe in terms of the risk of death among young people.
