Audi is preparing to follow in the footsteps of Mercedes-Benz and focus on Formula E, as early as next season.

New year, new strategy. After 18 years at the forefront of endurance competition, with 13 victories in the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours, as expected, Audi on Wednesday announced the withdrawal from the World Endurance Championship (WEC) after this season.

The news was given by Rupert Stadler, chairman of the Board of Directors of the brand, who took the opportunity to confirm his bet on Formula E, a competition with great potential, according to him. “As our production cars become more and more electric, so do our competition models. We are going to compete in the race for the future of electric propulsion,” he says.

“After 18 exceptionally successful years in competition, it is clear that it is difficult to leave. Audi Sport Team Joest shaped the World Endurance Championship during this period like no other team, and for that I would like to thank Reinhold Joeste as well to the entire team, drivers, partners and sponsors.”

Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsport.

For now, the bet on the DTM is to continue, while the future in the Ralicrosse World Championship remains to be defined.
