We tested the new Peugeot 508 SW. everything you need to know

Portugal is in fashion and recommended. Our country was once again the chosen stage for a round of first tests with a new model. An event that, in addition to having a positive impact on the local economy (in this case, in the Municipality of Cascais), places Portugal in the background of many magazines, websites, television programs and, of course, videos on YouTube.

What is it?

The new Peugeot 508 SW is the second model of the French brand to use the EMP2 platform, the first was its 4-door version, the Peugeot 508. On the DS, this platform is also used by the DS7 Crossback.

It is Peugeot's new bet on the D segment, a product that is not premium, but wants to position itself as the best of generalists. This means that Peugeot continues to move forward with its plan to become the number one generalist brand. Consequently, it also means surpassing Volkswagen, one of the targets to be taken down in this crusade.

What has changed from the previous generation? Everything. Starting with the positioning within the offer of vans in this segment. A change in line with what Peugeot is doing with the rest of the model range.

The Peugeot 508 SW is the smallest van in the segment and even has less luggage capacity (530 against 560 litres) than the previous generation, all to give it an athletic stance and superior status. At least that was the intention pointed out by Gilles Vidal, design director at Peugeot, during a brief conversation we had.

Regarding Volkswagen Passat, direct competitor of the Peugeot 508 SW, there is a balance between the offer of engines. In terms of interior space, the style that Peugeot chose to give the van makes it less spacious compared to the German proposal.

How much does it cost?

The Peugeot 508 SW arrives in Portugal in June and there are still no definitive prices for the Portuguese market, as such the figures presented are an estimate advanced by Peugeot.

Starting at 36 200 euros is the Diesel engine for access to the range and which will represent, according to the brand, 80% of sales nationwide . I'm talking about the Peugeot 508 SW equipped with a 130 hp 1.5 BlueHDi engine and a six-speed manual gearbox, here with a value corresponding to the Active equipment level.

Companies and individuals alike continue to buy cars with Diesel engines, mainly in this segment. Will this change? Yes, but it will take time…
