Objective: electrify everything. Upcoming BMW X1 and 5 Series will have 100% electric versions

Committed to reducing emissions per vehicle by at least 1/3 by 2030, BMW has an ambitious electrification plan in place that includes the launch of 25 electrified models by 2023. That said, confirmation that the BMW X1 and 5 Series will have an electric version comes up without much surprise.

According to the Bavarian brand, this 100% electric variant will join the petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions that will continue to make up the range of the two models. The first BMW model to feature four different types of powertrain will be the new 7 Series, which is scheduled to be launched in 2022.

For now, little is known about the electric variant of the new BMW X1 and Series 5. Even so, it is likely that they will resort to the “mechanics” of the new iX3, that is, an engine with 286 hp (210 kW) and 400 Nm powered by an 80 kWh battery capacity.

When they reach the market, the 100% electric variants of the BMW X1 and 5 Series will be “companioned” in the BMW range of models such as the iX3, iNext and i4, all of which are exclusively electric models.

A plan on all fronts

According to BMW CEO Oliver Zipse, the German brand's ambition is to "lead in the field of sustainability". According to Zipse, this new strategic direction will “be anchored in all divisions — from administration and purchasing, development and production to sales”.

According to Autocar, in addition to intending to launch more electrified models, the Bavarian brand also plans to reduce carbon emissions from its manufacturing units by 80% per car produced.

As if to prove his commitment to sustainability, Oliver Zipse said: “We're not just making abstract statements — we've developed a detailed ten-year plan with mid-year targets for the period to 2030 (…) we'll report on our progress every year (…) the awards from the Board of Directors and executive management will also be linked to these results”.
