Which brands are still resisting SUVs?

Anonim

The numbers don't lie — approximately 30% of total new car sales in Europe in 2017 went to SUVs and crossovers and promise not to stop there. Analysts are unanimous in predicting that the SUV market share in the European market will continue to grow, at least until 2020.

In part, it's not hard to see why — new proposals keep coming up, from city crossovers to super SUVs. The year 2018 will be no different. Not only do brands continue to add SUVs to their ranges — even Lamborghini has an SUV — they were the type of vehicle of choice to launch another invasion — the electric ones. Jaguar I-PACE, Audi E-Tron and Mercedes-Benz EQC are among the first.

The question arises: who doesn't have an SUV?

It's not very surprising to find that the set of brands without SUVs in their ranges is getting smaller and smaller. It was not difficult to gather them and it appears that most of them are small manufacturers of sports or luxury.

We separate those that have SUVs planned for the near future from those that have no plans or just don't know about them. In other words, in a few years, all the fingers of one hand will not be needed to count the brands without SUV models.

alpine

Even now reborn, and recently hailed for the excellent A110, Alpine already has plans for an SUV, due to appear in 2020.

The century-old British brand also did not resist the charms of the typology. Anticipated by the DBX concept, we will see the production model presented perhaps still in 2019, with sales scheduled for 2020.

Chrysler
A high-volume brand without an SUV? Since it was acquired by Fiat, forming the FCA, Chrysler has been lacking in models — in addition to the now defunct 200C, it only won the Pacific MPV. It is based on this that an SUV will appear, scheduled for 2019 or 2020, but, like the brand, it should stay in North America.
Ferrari

If in 2016, Sergio Marchionne said that a Ferrari SUV only “over my dead body”, in 2018 he gave absolute certainty that there would be a… FUV — Ferrari Utility Vehicle — in 2020. Is there really a need for one? Probably not, but Marchionne has promised (to shareholders) to double profits, and um… FUV in the range will certainly facilitate that goal.

Lotus
Simplify, then add lightness. The words of Colin Chapman, the founder of the British brand, have never made as much sense as they do in our days, when we're definitely heading down the opposite path. Now in Geely's hands, the SUV that was already planned for 2020, it seems that it will only arrive there for 2022. But it will arrive…
Rolls-Royce

Like Ferrari, was a Rolls-Royce SUV really necessary? The aristocratic British brand already produces one of the biggest cars on the planet, rivaling in scale with the biggest examples of the typology. But even so, brace yourselves, because this year we should meet the SUV's Rolls-Royce — literally.

Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus

Even a small, very small, manufacturer like SCG is going to introduce an SUV. Well, looking at the image, it will be a very different machine from the other existing examples. Rear mid-engine in an SUV? Correct and affirmative. SCG Boot and Expedition will hit the market in 2019 or 2020.

Bugatti

It's a one-model brand, so for now, everything that comes along will be related to the Chiron. The future is already being discussed, but if there is a new model, it should fall, again, to a super saloon, similar to the 2009 Galibier 16C concept.

Koenigsegg
The small Swedish manufacturer will continue to bet on its hyper sports. Now that record holder Agera nears its end, the hybrid Regera will make the headlines in 2018.
lancia

It is guaranteed that, for now, there are no plans for an SUV of the brand in the coming years. Because, honestly, we don't know if there will be a brand in the next few years — yes the brand still exists, and it only sells one model, the Ypsilon, and in only one country, Italy.

McLaren
The British brand recently announced that it had no plans for a future SUV, considering rivals — Lamborghini and Ferrari — who have already presented or are about to present a proposal in this regard. Will McLaren keep its promise?
Morgan

The venerable little English builder seems not to be interested in these "modernities". But Morgan has surprised us in the past — it recently introduced the EV3, a 100% electric Morgan — so who knows? Its identity is clearly based on a time before Willys MB, so it doesn't even make sense to follow that path, but anything is possible.

pagan
We will hardly see an SUV in the most exclusive of Italian manufacturers. But considering the longevity of Zonda, which continues to re-emerge according to the wishes of wealthy customers, would Horacio Pagani give in to make one if a customer proposed it?
smart

Coming from the universe of small manufacturers of sports cars and luxury cars, Smart resists — bravely, we note — market trends. With the announcement that, from 2019 onwards, all Smarts will be progressively just electric and only electric, and the brand is betting heavily on mobility solutions, it is unlikely that we will see a Smart SUV. In the past, there was talk of a Formore, and one or another concept was seen in that sense, but it was just for the intentions.
