Amsterdam to ban petrol, diesel and motorbikes in 2030

The news was advanced by the British newspaper “The Guardian” and reports on the plan of the City Council of Amsterdam to ensure an improvement in air quality, which should lead to a total ban on the circulation of gasoline, diesel and even motorbikes within the Dutch city from 2030.

The plan will be implemented in a phased manner, with the first measure coming next year, when Amsterdam will prohibit Diesel models older than 15 years from overtaking the A10 road that surrounds the city.

For 2022, it is planned to ban any buses that have… exhaust pipes in the city. From 2025 onwards, the ban will be extended to recreational boats that navigate the canals and also to small motorcycles and mopeds.

A (very) controversial plan

All measures previously listed will culminate in 2030 in the ban on the circulation of petrol, diesel and even motorbikes within the city limits of Amsterdam all these measures being included in the so-called Clean Air Action plan.

The idea of the Amsterdam council is to encourage residents to switch from internal combustion vehicles to electric or hydrogen vehicles. In view of these plans, Amsterdam will have to reinforce (a lot) the network of charging stations, which by 2025 will have to go from the current 3000 to between 16 thousand and 23 thousand.

Unsurprisingly, the voices critical of this plan did not wait, with the Rai Association (automotive industry pressure group) accusing the plan of leaving large swaths of the population that cannot afford to buy an electric car.

The association went even further, and accused the plan devised by the Amsterdam executive of being bizarre and regressive, recalling that “many tens of thousands of families who cannot afford an electric car will be left out. This will make Amsterdam a city of the rich”.
