The latest additions to the most appealing bodyworks in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class range (generation W213) have just been unveiled. After the limousine and van versions, it was now the turn of the E-Class Coupé and Cabrio to receive the necessary updates.

Launched in 2017, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class W213 generation was already beginning to show the weight of the years. That's why the German brand decided to review the most critical points of this generation.

Abroad, the changes are only in detail, but they make a difference. The headlights have a new design and the front has been slightly redesigned.

At the rear, we can see a new luminous signature that aims to enhance the sportier side of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class range.

Also in the field of design, the Mercedes-AMG E 53, the only AMG version available in the E-Class Coupé and Convertible, also received due attention. The aesthetic changes were even more profound, with an emphasis on the front grille with the «family air» from the Affalterbach range.

Interior becomes current

Although in aesthetic terms the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé and Cabrio continued to take care of themselves when it came to the interior, in terms of technology, the situation was not exactly the same.

Also in the field of comfort, there is a new program called “ENERGIZING COACH”. This uses the sound system, ambient lights and seats with massage, using an algorithm to try to activate or relax the driver, depending on his physical condition.

Urban Guard. The anti-theft alarm

In this facelift of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé and Cabrio, the German brand took the opportunity to make life difficult for other people's friends.

E-Class now have two alarm systems available. THE Urban Guard , a conventional alarm that offers the additional possibility of being notified on our smartphone when someone tries to get into our car or collides with it in a parking lot. Through the application "Mercedes Me", we receive all the information regarding these incidents.

For the most zealous, there is also the Urban Guard Plus , a system that allows tracking of the vehicle's position via GPS, even if the car's location system is disabled. Best part? Police can be notified.

Electrified engines

For the first time in the Class E range, we will have mild-hybrid engines in the OM 654 (Diesel) and M 256 (petrol) engines — 48 V parallel electrical systems. Thanks to this system, the energy of the electrical systems is no longer supplied by the engine .

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ version now uses an electrified 3.0 liter engine with 435 hp and 520 Nm of maximum torque.

Instead, the air conditioning system, driving support systems, assisted steering, etc., are now powered by a 48 V electric motor/generator which, in addition to providing energy to the electrical system, is capable of providing a momentary boost power to the combustion engine.

Result? Lower consumption and emissions.

In terms of range, the already known versions E 220 d, E 400d, E 200, E 300 and E 450 will join a new version E 300d.

OM 654 M: the most powerful four-cylinder diesel ever?

Behind the 300 d designation we find a more evolved version of the OM 654 engine (2.0, four-cylinder in-line), which is now known internally by the code name OM 654 M.

Compared to 220d, the 300 d sees its power rise from 194 hp to 265 hp and the maximum torque grow from 400 Nm to a much more expressive 550 Nm.

Thanks to these specifications, the OM 654 M engine claims for itself the title of most powerful four-cylinder diesel engine ever.

The changes to the well-known OM 654 translate into a slight increase in displacement — from 1950 cm3 to 1993 cm3 —, the presence of two liquid-cooled variable geometry turbos and greater pressure in the injection system. Add in the presence of the infamous 48 V system, which is able to fatten the advertised numbers by an additional 15 kW (20 hp) and 180 Nm under certain conditions.
