The information is advanced by a source usually well-informed on the backstage of the Munich builder, the German Bimmer Post: the new BMW M2 Competition it may not be a complement to the current M2, with everything indicating that it will effectively be its replacement, assuming the role of proposed entry into the famous “M” family.
Why? The reason for this more extreme change is in the new consumption/emissions tests WLTP and RDE. With BMW having two similar powertrains for the same purpose — the N55 for the M2 and the S55 for the M4 — it doesn't make sense to keep the two units. It will only be up to the S55 to meet the latest certification requirements by revamping the N55.
Thus, as a propellant, the BMW M2 Competition will have a more “modest” version of the S55, that is, the in-line six cylinders and 3.0 liters twin turbo, with an advertised power of 410 hp, 40 hp more than the current M2, but 15 hp less than the M4 . Being also lighter, the weight/power ratio of the two proposals should be practically the same.
As for the transmission, it is not yet certain that this new Competition version will have, even if as an option, the manual gearbox currently available on the M2. All pointing, yes, to appear with the already known automatic transmission (DCT) of seven speeds.

The 40 hp more should allow for better performance. The 0 to 100 km/h of the current one, with the DCT box, are performed in 4.3 seconds, so it is expected, one or more tenths less. The electronically limited 250 km/h top speed is maintained. All these changes will mean, according to rumors, a significant increase in the price, compared to those currently requested by the M2, in the order of 10 thousand euros . The new BMW M2 Competition will be unveiled at the next Beijing Motor Show, which opens its doors (to the press) on April 25th. The delivery of the first units should take place later in the summer.
