Remember the Opel GSi? They are back.

Opel has been one of the most talked about car brands in recent times. Whether by the acquisition of the German brand by Grupo PSA, or by the recent launch of several models.

A total renewal of the range that started with the Opel Astra – Car of the Year in Portugal and Europe – and which promises to continue with the new Opel Insignia. Not forgetting the new SUV’s, of course.

But this article isn't about SUVs, it's about sports cars and the return of the GSi acronym to Opel. A long-awaited return by lovers of the German brand.

Opel has just released a video with the first images of the Insignia GSi at the Nürburgring, which served as a stage for the development of this model.

Powered by a 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine, 260hp and 400 Nm of maximum torque, this new Insignia is faster on the circuit than its predecessor: the Opel Insignia OPC. This, despite the latter resorting to a 2.8 liter V6 engine with 325 hp.

In addition to the GSi petrol version , will also be available a variant animated by a 2.0 liter diesel engine with a nice 210 hp.

Faster, how?

The answer is always the same: engineering. The new Insignia GSi lost more than 160 kg compared to its predecessor and gained a rear axle with torque vectoring and differential lock (same as the Focus RS). The platform also gained torsional rigidity and the brakes are by Brembo.

These condiments all together result in a predictably more efficient model than its predecessor. If this is what future models in the GSi range have in store for us, a bright future is in store for Opel's sporty lineage.
