Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet renovated en route to Frankfurt

The presentation of the renewed Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet will happen tomorrow at the Frankfurt Motor Show. As with the S-Class saloon, the coupé and cabriolet will benefit from new equipment and more.

In this facelift, the style was slightly revised, highlighting the new bumpers, side skirts and the OLED (organic light-emitting diode) rear optics. This technology obtains illumination through glass plates, on which thin layers of organic materials are printed. In total there are 66 ultra-flat OLEDs, ensuring a homogeneous light pattern and a unique signature, both day and night.

Panoramic cockpit now with three distinct styles

The interior continues to be marked by the digital instrument panel composed of two 12.3-inch TFT screens, arranged horizontally. Placed behind a single pane of glass, they form what the brand defines as a Panoramic Cockpit. The graphics have been revised and now allow you to choose three distinct styles: Classic, Sporty and Progressive.

In addition to the screens, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet come with Touch Control Buttons on the steering wheel, which respond to finger movements like a mobile phone screen. These allow you to control the functions of the instrument panel and infotainment system.

The latter gained support for topographic maps and Realistic 3D images.

Like the saloon, the coupé and cabriolet can also come, optionally, with the Energizing Control Comfort – a system that allows you to choose up to six different programs or “states of mind”, with the aim of increasing the well-being and performance of the occupants. . These programs last 10 minutes and control all comfort equipment: from air conditioning, fragrance, seats (heating, ventilation and massage), lighting and audio system.

Predictably, the Intelligent Drive driving assistance systems have been improved . Driver assistance is now, according to the brand, more comfortable, maintaining a safe distance to the vehicle in front and even allowing automatic speed adjustment before curves, junctions and roundabouts.

V8: more power and less consumption

Although the S400 is now the S450, under the bonnet there is a 3.0 liter gasoline turbo V6 with the same power value – 367 hp. But there is news. The S450 adopts a free wheel system – when the conditions are right, the combustion engine is uncoupled from the gearbox and operates at idle speed -, and comes equipped with a particle filter.

One step higher, in block V8, the transformations are deeper. The S500 becomes the S560 and despite the increase in the name, this V8 engine is in fact smaller – from 4.7 to 4.0 liters -, while still being bi-turbo. The block may have less capacity, but it was no deterrent to the power growing by 14 hp, culminating in 469 hp and equaling the 700 Nm of torque of the predecessor.

Mercedes-Benz announces lower consumption and emissions of up to 8% compared to its predecessor. A cylinder deactivation system contributes to this, as well as the adoption, for the entire range, of a new nine-speed automatic gearbox: the 9G-TRONIC.

Above these reside the Mercedes-AMG S63 and S65, and as before they are differentiated by the use of a V8 and a V12, respectively. While in the case of the more exotic S65 everything remains the same, in the S63 we also witnessed the replacement of the previous 5.5 liter V8 by a more vitamin-filled version of the 4.0 liter V8. Engine we've already seen on the E63, for example.

And just like the S560, the smaller V8 surpasses the predecessor by 27 hp, now reaching 612, equaling the torque of 900 Nm (!) . Such numbers allow reaching 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds – not bad considering the vast proportions and weight of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet.

The S63 is combined with a 4MATIC traction system and an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G nine-speed automatic gearbox.
