BMW M4 CSL, is that you? Here comes a lighter and more powerful M4

The BMW M4 Competition (G82) has just made its commercial debut in Portugal, but the Munich brand is already preparing an even more radical version of its coupé, which could well act as a kind of farewell to M4 with a purely engine combustion.

We had access (only nationally) to the first spy photos of this variant of the new M4 and although it is not possible to say at all which version it is, there seem to be no doubts as to the essence of this proposal.

This will be the most radical version of the new BMW M4 range and when introduced, it will have a more aggressive body kit, will be lighter and will most likely have even more power coming out of the twin-turbo inline six-cylinder block. 3.0 liters that live under the hood.

Lowered suspension, larger exhausts and a more pronounced rear spoiler. These are some of the differences between this test prototype and the production BMW M4.

The prototype “caught up” in these spy photos displays a dense camouflage — combined with the Frozen Portimao Blue hue — that doesn't allow us to detect big differences to the current M4 Competition, but when we look more closely we realize that it has a safety cage on the interior, which only reinforces the idea that this will be a “spicy” version of the German coupé.

Also noticeable is a slightly lowered suspension, a fixed spoiler in the boot lid, larger exhaust outlets and new wheels that immediately bring us back to the wheels that fitted the old BMW M4 GTS and BMW M4 CS.

Lower front bumper diffuser is more pronounced and has new aerodynamic appendages at the ends.

In addition to all this, this prototype has a front bumper slightly modified compared to the M3 and M4 we already know, with the lower diffuser ending with vertical flaps at the ends, for a more efficient aerodynamic behavior.

BMW M4 CSL, is that you?

Since 2004 — with the M3 (E46) CSL Coupé — BMW has not had a model with the CSL (Coupe Sport Leichtbau) signature in its line-up, although in 2015 it adopted an entirely similar approach for the BMW M4 GTS.

But now, everything indicates that the Munich brand is preparing to recover the acronym CSL and apply it to the new BMW M4, in a very limited series — of the M3 CSL Coupé only 1400 units were produced.

Wheels remind us of those used on the BMW M4 GTS and M4 CS. Is it a sign?

The specialized publication Bimmerpost not only has no doubt that this is the prototype for the development of the new M4 CSL, but it even advances a date for the start of production: July 2022, which suggests an official presentation or at the end of this one. year or early next year.

We can't wait for this M4 CSL, but while it doesn't arrive, you can always see or review Diogo Teixeira's test (on video) of the most powerful M4 today, the BMW M4 Competition with 510 hp.
