The Renault Group is committed to accelerating its electric vehicle strategy and has just confirmed that it intends to launch ten new 100% electric models by 2025, seven of which for the Renault brand.

This objective is part of the eWays strategic plan now announced by Luca de Meo, executive director of the Renault Group, which also provides for the development of batteries and technology with a view to reducing costs.

In this digital event, where Luca de Meo insisted that the Gallic brand intends to be “one of the most, if not the greenest in Europe”, Renault showed for the first time the 4Ever, a prototype that anticipates a future electric model which should be something of a modern reinterpretation of the iconic Renault 4.

New Mégane E-Tech Electric (aka MéganE) will be released in 2022.

But this is not the only historic name for Renault that will be recovered to name future electric models. The Renault 5 will also have the right to a 21st century version, with the French brand revealing that it will cost around 33% less than the current ZOE, giving “body” to the idea of wanting to democratize electric mobility.

In addition to these two models, another well-known name: MéganE. Based on the CMF-EV platform (the same on which Nissan's new electric crossover will be built), the MéganE will begin production in 2021 and will be launched on the market in 2022.

Native platforms for trams

The expansion of the Renault Group's electric range will be based on specific platforms for electric models, namely the CMF-EV and CMF-BEV.

The first — CMF-EV — is oriented towards the C and D segments and will represent 700,000 units within the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance by 2025. Capable of offering a range of up to 580 km (WLTP), it allows for ideal distribution of weight, direct steering, low center of gravity and a multi-arm rear suspension.

French brand will recover two historic names: Renault 4 and Renault 5.

The CMF-BEV platform is intended for B-segment models, with more “restrained” prices and offers up to 400 km (WLTP) of electric autonomy.

Halve the cost of batteries

The Renault Group has managed to halve the cost of batteries over the past ten years and now wants to repeat that reduction over the next decade.

To this end, the Renault Group has just established a partnership with Envision AESC for the development of a gigantic plant in Douai, France, with a capacity of 9 GWh in 2024 and which could reach 24 GWh in 2030.

In addition, the French group also signed a memorandum of understanding to become a shareholder of the French start-up Verkor, with a stake of more than 20%, with the objective of building the first gigafactory for high-performance batteries in France, with a initial capacity of 10 GWh that can “grow” up to 20 GWh in 2030.
