New Citroën C5 caught up in testing. Goodbye sedan, hello crossover

We were promised a new Citron C5 in 2020, but so far we've seen nothing — blame, in part, on the pandemic, which has created all sorts of chaos in the development of so many new cars, affecting the agendas of all brands.

But as the spy photos we bring you exclusively nationally demonstrate, the development of the new Citroën C5 is proceeding at a good pace. Rumors point to a revelation as early as April.

What the spy photos also reveal is that the (previously) so-called influence of the 2016 CXperience concept on the design of the future C5 seems a little more dubious.

The CXperience's long, low, two-volume (quasi-fastback) silhouette was left out, as was the immense wheelbase, evoking the large saloons of the French brand from the past, to give way to something more in line with the reality of the current market: a crossover.

The new Citroën C5 will follow the same recipe we saw in the familiar compact C4, betting on something that goes beyond the usual standards for the segment. A trend that we will see reinforced in the coming years: in addition to the C5, the successor to the Ford Mondeo will also give way to a new crossover.

What do we already know?

Technically there shouldn't be too many surprises. The new model will most likely be based on the EMP2 platform, the same one that equips the Peugeot 508 and the new DS 9.

In addition to the base, it should share with its “cousins” the engines that include plug-in hybrids, those that make the most sense so that the CO2 emission bills hit the mark. The EMP2 does not allow 100% electric variants, so it is not expected that the new Citroën C5 will have one, unlike what happens, for example, in the C4.

At the moment it is also not possible to confirm whether or not it will have a diesel engine.

The influence of CXperience should be more evident in the definition of various elements, such as the grille and headlamps assembly.

Just like the “cousin” DS 9, the Citroën C5 will also be produced in China, where it is expected to be its biggest market. The unveiling in April is expected to take place precisely in China, with the start of marketing to take place during next summer.
