New Mazda CX-5 wants to overcome the Germans. Rear-wheel drive and prime engines

Mazda's rise continues. With each new generation of models, the positioning that the Japanese brand based in the city of Hiroshima aspires to achieve is increasingly clear.

The commitment to organic design, quality of materials and a driver-centered vision of the car — at a time when the automotive industry is focusing almost everything on autonomous driving — has contributed to consumers' perception of Mazda closer to the brands premium than generalist brands.

According to rumors now being circulated by BestCarWeb.jp, one of Mazda's last steps as a premium brand could come with the new generation Mazda CX-5.

Mazda CX-5. More premium than ever

According to our colleagues at BestCarWeb.jp, the next Mazda CX-5 will make use of the brand's new rear-wheel drive platform.

A brand new, newly developed platform that will serve as the foundation for a renewed range of Mazda models. First the confirmed Mazda6, and now the new Mazda CX-5.

This is not just any platform. It is a platform developed from scratch for rear-wheel drive models, capable of receiving engines up to six cylinders. Two technological orientations that required courage on the part of Mazda's management.

At a time when the entire industry is betting on a reduction in the mechanical component of its models, Mazda continues to defend the technological validity of combustion engines. Without underestimating electrification, Mazda continues to believe in this technology and to develop it — the Skyactiv-X engines and the new Wankel engines are proof of that.

We are talking about atmospheric and diesel engines, with six cylinders in line, with displacements between 3.0 and 3.3 liters of capacity.

Mazda CX-5 range could grow

As with the German premium brands, Mazda will be able to derive the CX-5 in two bodies, making room for a new Mazda CX-50. A sportier, more dynamic version of the future Mazda CX-5.

However, the wait for these new models will still be long. We're not likely to see the new Mazda CX-5 and CX-50 on the road until 2022. One thing is certain: despite all odds, in the year Mazda celebrates its centenary, the brand seems more focused than ever.
