Volkswagen Polo 2018. The first images (and not only) of the new generation

If we include all Volkswagen Polo generations, it has sold over 16 million units worldwide. It was, therefore, with enormous responsibility that Herbert Diess, chairman of the board of directors of Volkswagen, presented the sixth generation of the Polo in Berlin.

In stylistic terms, the watchword was evolution, not revolution. The front follows the latest trends in the brand, with slender headlights and a more fluid integration with the grille with chrome details. On the flanks, a more pronounced shoulder and a more pronounced waistline stand out. And at the rear we find more trapezoidal design optics. But above all, the new Polo stands out for its proportions, which approach those of the segment above, due to its new set of dimensions (wider and slightly lower).

Fruit of Volkswagen's MQB A0 platform – debuted by the new SEAT Ibiza – and now offered exclusively with five doors, it can be said that the Polo has grown in almost every way. It is 4,053 mm in length, 1 751 mm in width, 1,446 mm in height and 2,564 mm in wheelbase. Thanks to this increase in the overall dimensions of the car, space for the driver and passengers is significantly improved, as is the luggage capacity – from 280 to 351 litres.

In the cabin, we find a technological compendium that was previously only accessible to Golf and Passat. In addition, the new Polo is responsible for debuting the new generation of Active Info Display, a 100% digital instrument panel – unprecedented in the segment, according to Volkswagen. On the side, in the center console, we find a touch screen that concentrates the navigation and entertainment features in itself, available between 6.5 and 8.0 inches.

As for assistance and safety systems, Active Cruise Control (with Stop&Go on versions with DSG gearbox), Blind Spot Detection with Rear Traffic Alert and Park Assist are available as options.

The Polo will be equipped with the block 1.0 MPI , with 65 and 75 horses, the 1.0 TSI , with 95 and 115 hp, the new 1.5 TSI with 150 hp (and cylinder deactivation system), the 1.6 TDI of 80 and 95 hp and for the first time the 1.0 TGI (natural gas), with 90 hp.

At the top we find the Polo GTI . Volkswagen wasted no time and the most powerful and sporty version of the Polo will be available right at the launch of this new generation. The Polo GTI starts to use the 2.0 TSI with 200 hp power , which will allow accelerations from 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds.

The new generation of Volkswagen Polo arrives on European markets this year, and should be present at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
