Ford's small but powerful 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine was named best-in-class at the International Engine of the Year awards for the fifth consecutive year.

In a year when competition from turbocharged engines below a liter turbocharged with direct fuel injection has increased considerably, the frugal three-cylinder EcoBoost engine was again named “Best Engine up to 1 liter” of 2015.

This year, it finished ahead of 32 competing engines, 19 more than in 2012. The judges praised the combination of driveability, performance, economy, refinement and technology that continues to set the standard. In 2014, the 1 liter EcoBoost became the first engine to win the International Engine of the Year for the third consecutive time, and was named in 2012 as “Best New Engine”.

“The 1 liter EcoBoost engine changed the game and although others have followed suit, it remains the undisputed benchmark in its class for five years,” Joe Bakaj, Vice President of Product Development, Ford of Europe

Available with 100hp, 125hp and 140hp, and even 180hp on the Ford Fiesta R2 for rallying, the 1.0 EcoBoost engine powers vehicles in 72 countries around the world. In the 140hp version, the engine has better horsepower per liter than a Bugatti Veyron.

A road version of a Formula Ford equipped with a declination of this engine with 205hp, completed a lap at Germany's famous Nürburgring circuit in 7 minutes and 22 seconds, a performance that puts it ahead of a group of supercars like the Lamborghini Aventador with more than 600 horsepower, the Ferrari Enzo and the Pagani Zonda.
