Singer, Williams and Mezger unveil six 500 hp boxer cylinders... air-cooled

For those unfamiliar, Singer Vehicle Design is dedicated, as the company says, to re-imagining the Porsche 911. The attention to detail and quality of execution are outstanding. If restomodding has a hierarchy, Singer would have to be at or very close to the top.

And so it should remain with the announcement of his latest project, which will focus on the venerable air-cooled six-cylinder boxer. The starting point was the engine of the 911(964) - a six-cylinder boxer with 3.6 liters, delivering 250 hp at 6100 rpm.

Originally conceived by the legendary Hans Mezger, Singer did not shy away from asking for your collaboration for the task at hand, returning to active service as a technical consultant.

To compose this dream team, there's nothing like joining forces with Williams Advanced Engineering (part of the Williams Grand Prix present in Formula 1) and getting to work. And the result is glorious:

  • 500 horses
  • Capacity grows from 3.6 liters to the 4.0 liters
  • Four valves per cylinder and two camshafts per bench
  • More than 9000 rpm (!)
  • Dual oil circuit
  • titanium connecting rods
  • Aluminum throttle bodies with carbon fiber inlet horns
  • Upper and lower injectors for better performance
  • Carbon fiber air box with active resonator for optimized torque delivery at medium speeds
  • Inconel and titanium exhaust system
  • Engine fan enlarged and optimized in its design
  • Ram Air Intake System
  • Lightweight materials used extensively such as titanium, magnesium and carbon fiber

The car that will debut this glorious creation will be a 1990 911 (964) owned by Scott Blattner. he says he was intrigued by the new level of restoration and modification services proposed by Singer, focused on high performance and weight reduction. Blattner is no stranger to Singer – this will be their fourth car ordered from them. There are already two 911 coupés and a targa in his garage.

Helping our customers realize their vision for a re-imagined Porsche 911 with the help of automotive royalty is a privilege. […] With careful and dedicated development, the iconic air-cooled engine has a lot to give existing devotees and a new generation of enthusiasts.

Rob Dickinson, Founder of Singer Vehicle Design

Paul McNamara, technical director of Williams Advanced Engineering, also references the opportunity to consult Hans Mezger – the “father” of the iconic six-cylinder air-cooled boxer – in developing the new engine.

The final result, mounted on the car, will be known soon. We look forward to it.
