520 hp in the Ford Focus RS? "No problem," says Mountune

The entry of the WLTP protocol in 2018 was the "death sentence" for the Ford Focus RS , which is no longer marketed, but that does not mean that the powerful hot hatch has been forgotten.

Maybe it's not that powerful, considering the latest news from well-known British trainer Mountune. This presented two new packages that (substantially) increase the number of horses extracted from the 2.3 l tetra-cylinder EcoBoost that equips the Focus RS.

The chosen nomenclatures could not be clearer in their intentions: m450 and m520 — yes… 450 hp and 520 hp (!), respectively, for the Ford Focus RS, that is, 100 hp and 170 hp more than the original 350 hp.

Looking at the announced values, as you can imagine, this is not a “simple” reprogramming of the ECU. Mountune dispensed with the original turbo that powered the 2.3 EcoBoost, instead using BorgWarner's EFR (Engineered for Racing) units.

THE m450 package it uses a BorgWarner EFR-7658 turbocharger, and accompanying it are new intake and changes to the exhaust system, including a new downpipe and catalysts that are less restrictive to the passage of exhaust gases. The final numbers indicate 450 hp and 580 Nm , which in itself is a considerable leap in power and torque compared to the series model.

As it was not enough, there is the m520 package . It uses a more advanced BorgWarner EFR-7163 turbocharger, as well as a new fuel pump, new camshafts and camshafts. Result: 520 hp and 700 Nm… in a Focus RS!

Unfortunately Mountune didn't disclose the effects of that much extra horsepower on performance, but we believe they are far better than standard — 4.7s at 0-100 km/h and 266 km/h top speed.
