There's still room for tradition in the Porsche Taycan's digital interior

It will be at the beginning of next month that we will meet the Porsche Taycan , the first electric car from the German manufacturer. However, it wasn't an impediment for Porsche to anticipate the big final revelation, already making known the interior of the Taycan.

And we quickly found that the interior of the Taycan was invaded… by screens, practically eliminating all the physical buttons. Have you counted them? In the images we see four screens, but there is also a fifth screen (5.9″), with haptic control, so that the rear passengers can control their climate area — there are four climate zones.

It's Porsche's first all-digital interior, yet it's still familiar — certain traditions haven't been forgotten. From the circular instruments and the general shape of the instrument panel itself, which automatically refers to that of other Porsches, with its origins going back to the first 911; to the location of the start button, which maintains the tradition of positioning itself to the left of the steering wheel.

The screen is curved, 16.8″, and keeps the circular instruments, typically Porsche — the central rev counter disappears, being replaced by a power meter. By doing away with the visor over the instruments, Porsche wanted to guarantee “a light and modern appearance in the style of high-quality smartphones and tablets”. It also has anti-reflective properties, by integrating a vapor-deposited polarizing filter.

Unlike other fully digital instrument panels, the Porsche Taycan's has the particularity of having small tactile controls on the sides of the screen that allow you to control features relating to lighting and the chassis.

There are four viewing modes:

  • Classic: presents circular instruments, with a power meter in the center;
  • Map: replaces the power meter in the center with the map;
  • Total Map: the navigation map now encompasses the entire panel;
  • Pure: reduces visible information to just the essentials for driving — speed, traffic signals and navigation (uses arrows only)

Screen for… passenger

The infotainment system consists of a 10.9″ central touchscreen, but for the first time it can be complemented with a second screen of equal size, placed in front of the front passenger, capable of controlling the same functions — music, navigation and connectivity. Of course, functions relating to driving systems are inaccessible to the passenger.

The control of the entire system can be done, in addition to touch, via voice, with the Taycan responding to the initial command… “Hey, Porsche”.

The last screen that remains to be described is the one located in the high center console, also tactile and with 8.4″, which in addition to allowing control of the climate system, also includes a handwriting recognition system, an aid when we want quickly enter a new destination into the navigation system.

Personalization out of sight

The Porsche Taycan, despite being the manufacturer's first production electric, is, in the first place, a Porsche. And you wouldn't expect anything other than a sea of possibilities for customizing the Taycan's interior.

We can opt for a sportier steering wheel (GT) and there are multiple coatings for the interior. From the classic leather interior, of various types, including a Club “OLEA” sustainably darkened with olive leaves; the skinless interior, using a material called “Race-Tex”, which uses microfibers, partially made up of recycled polyester fibres.

The choice is also wide when it comes to colors: Beige Black-Lime, Blackberry, Beige Atacama and Brown Meranti; and there are even special contrast color schemes: matte black, darkened silver or neodymium (champagne tone).

We can also choose between wood, matte carbon, aluminum or fabric finishes for the doors and center console.

The Porsche Taycan will be publicly unveiled at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, but we'll meet it sooner, on September 4th.
