It took 18 months to paint this Bugatti Divo "Lady Bug"

When the Bugatti Divo was unveiled in Pebble Beach in 2018, it didn't take long for a customer to ask the French brand for a special and customized version of the new hypersport.

The request was, at first glance, simple. After all, the customer just wanted to see their Divo painted in a geometric pattern with a diamond-shaped pattern in contrast to two colors: “Customer Special Red” and “Graphite”.

The idea was that the diamond-shaped graphics would extend across the entire car, matching the silhouette of the French hypersportsman. All that being said, it seemed like an easy job for the craftsmen of Molsheim, right? Look no, look no...

A headache"

In total, the project took about a year and a half and required the use of various simulations, the use of CAD data and even a test vehicle. The goal? Create the pattern with 1600 “diamonds” and ensure these were perfectly aligned before being applied to the customer's Bugatti Divo.

According to Jorg Grumer, head of colors and finishes at Bugatti, the project was almost abandoned, saying: “due to the nature of the project, in which a 2D graphic was applied to a “3D sculpture”, and after several failed ideas and Attempts to apply the diamonds, we came close to giving up and saying “we can't fulfill the client's wish”.

Despite the difficulties, the Bugatti team managed to solve all the problems and after a final “trial” on a test car there, they applied the very specific pattern to the client's Bugatti Divo.

Afterwards, employees of the Gallic brand still carefully evaluated each diamond for several days to ensure that everything was fine.

For the president of Bugatti, Stephan Winkelmann, this Divo “demonstrates what the brand is capable of doing in terms of creativity and skill”.

Nicknamed the “Lady Bug” (or in Portuguese “Joaninha”), this Bugatti Divo was delivered to its owner earlier this year, joining a collection that includes models such as the Vision Gran Turismo, the Chiron or the Veyron Vitesse.
