Successor to the Mazda CX-5 with rear-wheel drive platform? It seems so

Anonim

The expectations for the successor of the Mazda CX-5 it couldn't be higher as it has been the Hiroshima builder's best-selling model for many years.

The first information about the third generation of the CX-5 is now starting to appear. that should appear on the market in 2022 , five years after the launch of the second generation — the first generation of the CX-5 was also only five years on the market.

The first of all is about your designation. The registration of several patents by the Japanese brand indicate that the successor to the Mazda CX-5 may well be called the CX-50. In this way, it can be aligned with the CX-30, the first SUV of the brand to adopt the alphanumeric designation with two letters and two digits.

RWD platform and inline six-cylinder engines? ✔︎

However, the biggest novelty does not lie in its name, but in the base where it will be located and in the engines that will accompany it.

Unlike the current model, which is based on a front-wheel drive platform, the successor to the Mazda CX-5 is expected to be based on the already confirmed new rear-wheel-drive platform (RWD) that Mazda is developing. In addition to variants with rear-wheel drive, being an SUV and as it happens today, expect also variants with four-wheel drive.

Better yet, under the bonnet we should also find ambitious new developments in the form of two new in-line six-cylinder engines — which are already under development — gasoline and diesel, which will complement the four-cylinder units.

The specifications for the new in-line six-cylinder remain to be confirmed, but for now, rumors indicate that the gasoline engine will have a 3.0 l capacity and will use the SPCCI technology found in the Mazda3 and CX-30 Skyactiv-X, complemented by a system 48 V mild-hybrid. Diesel can be even higher, with 3.3 l, also associated with the mild-hybrid system.

If this all sounds like déjà vu, it's because we've reported it before, but in relation to the Mazda6's successor, which also has a release date set for 2022.

Mazda's ambitions to raise its market position are well known. The development of this new platform and engines are proof of that. The successors of the Mazda6, CX-5 and, very likely, the larger CX-8 and CX-9 (not sold in Europe) with this hardware, point batteries directly to premium brands, which resort to similar or identical solutions.
