The Volvo XC90 was awarded five stars in the Euro NCAP 2015 tests, standing out as the first car ever with 100% in the “Safety Assist” category.

“These results are further proof that, with the Volvo XC90, we have developed one of the safest cars in the world. Volvo Cars continues to be a leader in automotive safety innovation, well ahead of the competition with our standard safety offering,” said Peter Mertens, senior vice president for Research and Development for the Volvo Car Group.

Volvo's aim is that from 2020 no one loses their life or is seriously injured aboard a new Volvo. The Euro NCAP tests of the new Volvo XC90 are a clear indication that the right path is being taken in this direction.

“We are the first car manufacturer to exceed the criteria applied by Euro NCAP. The City Safety system is one of the most advanced standard impact prevention innovations a car can find – it automatically applies the car's brakes in the event of driver distraction and lack of braking in the face of obstacles such as cars, cyclists, pedestrians and now animals too, in certain situations, by day and now also at night,” said Martin Magnusson, Chief Engineer of the Volvo Car Group.

It should be noted that the 72% score in the “Pedestrian” category results from an impact on a pedestrian (dummy) which, in reality, and thanks to the City Safety system fitted as standard to the new Volvo XC90, would be avoided.
