Know the details behind the new Electric GT World Series competition, which will pass through some of the best circuits in the world.

Mark Gemmell and Agustín Payá (below), two electric mobility enthusiasts, are the founders of the new international competition Electric GT World Series , a championship exclusively for electric models. Unlike Formula E, the Electric GT bets on GT racing and will initially be based on the Tesla Model S P85+, with the necessary modifications in terms of safety and dynamics.

In the inaugural season, which will start next year, 10 teams will be present (one of them may be Portuguese), 20 cars and as many drivers from the five continents: Stefan Wilson, Vicky Priria, Leilani Münter and Dani Clos are already confirmed. Each race consists of 20 minutes of free practice, 30 minutes of qualifying and two races that cover 60 km.

The organization intends to make the Electric GT not only a motorsport competition, but also a stage for the promotion of new technologies where the public will be able to interact with the main players.

The presentation race takes place at the Circuit de Catalunya in August of next year, but the competition itself does not start until 23 September. The Electric GT starts on European soil and has on the calendar some of the reference circuits of the “old continent”, among which are the Nürburgring (Germany), Mugello (Italy), Donington Park (United Kingdom) and even our Circuit do Estoril. After the European circuits, the Electric GT will also pass through the American and Asian continents, where some extra-championship events are already planned.

“The Estoril Circuit is the ideal territory to compete in the Electric GT. And if, by that time, licenses are available for new teams, in fact, we have a structure interested in participating, led by Carlos Jesus, from ZEEV.”

One of the goals of the Electric GT, a project designed for the next five years, also involves the evolution of the competition each season. The debut season will be open to just one manufacturer – Tesla – and a single engineering team responsible for all the necessary modifications to the cars. From 2018 onwards, the entry of technical teams will be allowed, as well as the reduction of the weight of the cars and the adoption of higher capacity batteries, among other mechanical and electronic improvements.

2019 will already be the year for the entry of other brands, with the mandatory requirement for all cars to be level with regard to the weight/power ratio, in addition to changing batteries during the race. In the following year, each team will be able to modify their cars to improve aerodynamics, brakes and suspensions, and from 2021 it will be possible to make significant changes in battery technology.
