Toyota GR Yaris takes on Honda Civic Type R in a rain drag race

THE Toyota GR Yaris it only arrives in Portugal at the beginning of 2021 and the waiting time to get our hands on this demonic creature doesn't seem to pass any faster when we start watching videos like this one. In the best tradition of homologation specials, the GR Yaris is a balm in the midst of so many SUVs and all the discussion around emissions and electrification.

It might not make much sense to compare it with the Honda Civic Type R , the still king of hot hatch “everything ahead”, but gives rise to a race… interesting, as you'll see. Not only does the Civic Type R remain the most powerful of the “all ahead” but also one of, if not the most efficient, transferring the full force of its 2.0 l tetra-cylindrical only to the front wheels, thanks in part to its self-blocking differential.

It has almost 60 hp more than its rival on the occasion, almost 400 cm3 more and one more cylinder than the GR Yaris. It responds with two drive axles, both with self-locking differentials, a characteristic that can be fundamental in this particular drag race, as you can see that it rains “cats and dogs”, with the floor always being very wet.

There is still 100 kg to separate the two — it will probably be less, since the value of the Civic Type R corresponds to the 2017 model, and with the revisions operated in 2020, it was a little lighter —, with an advantage for the smallest of them . And finally, both come equipped with six-speed manual gearboxes.
