After the good performance of the Golf GTI TCR in 2016, Volkswagen renewed its sports car to meet the demands of the new season.

Last year alone, the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR was responsible for 17 race victories all over the world. This year, to further improve the performance of its racing model, Volkswagen engineers focused primarily on aerodynamics.

The new Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR features larger front air intakes, more pronounced wheel arches and redesigned diffusers. As for the engine, under the bonnet we find the same 2.0 liter 4-cylinder block that fitted its predecessor, but which now delivers 350 hp (+20 hp). This engine is mated to a 6-speed sequential transmission.

Despite the improvements it made to the new Golf GTI TCR, Volkswagen didn't want to compromise with numbers. Bearing in mind that the previous model accelerated from 0 to 100km/h in 5.2 seconds before reaching a maximum speed of 230 km/h, it is to be expected that the new model will slightly surpass these values.

“The first full season of the Golf GTI TCR was a real success from a sporting point of view. Our customers Leopard Racing and Liqui Moly Team Engstler have won both the international and Asian TCR championships. In motorsport, we cannot afford to rest, we have to continue to offer a competitive car that meets our customers' goals in a wide range of races around the world”.

Sven Smeets, director of Volkswagen Motorsport

Volkswagen plans to deliver around 50 cars this season and each will cost around €90,000.
