Cold Start. Why isn't the Mazda CX-30 called the CX-4?

Anonim

the denomination CX-30 it took us by surprise, not fitting into the current structure delineated by Mazda to identify its SUVs. Wouldn't it make more sense to call it the CX-4?

However, if you've been with us longer, you'll surely know that Mazda has more SUVs than those we have access to. In addition to the CX-3 and CX-5, there is a CX-8 and a CX-9 not sold here. And, surprise, there is also a CX-4 since 2016, sold in China.

And that's precisely why the new CX-30 is called… CX-30. To avoid confusion with the existing CX-4 and sell two different models with the same name (which are unlikely to cross paths in any market), Mazda opted for a new alphanumeric identification , with a couple of numbers and a couple of letters — inspired by the BT-50, its pick-up — going against the logic established until now.

The "Chinese" CX-4.

But to avoid confusion with a model sold only in China, isn't Mazda creating another focus of confusion given its proximity to the CX-3 nomenclature? Or could the CX-30 lead to a future makeover of Mazda's SUV names?
