Historically one of the most important models in the current offer of the Stuttgart manufacturer, the Mercedes-Benz SL coupé-cabriolet is already preparing a new generation, which also promises to be a kind of revolution. From the outset, thanks to the return of the classic canvas hood, but, more importantly, to a clear improvement in habitability. Able to make the rear seats a real solution for transporting two more adults.
If in the last two generations it has been an unwavering follower of the metal roof and hinged folding roof, the future Mercedes-Benz SL should return to the solution used in the much lighter R129 with a canvas hood.
Developed in stockings with the Mercedes-AMG GT
Perhaps the most interesting fact is that the future R232 is being developed side-by-side with the new generation of the Mercedes-AMG GT, which should allow it to show a much more dynamic vein, worthy of its name — Sportlich-Leicht (Sports Light).There is also no lack of rumors to guarantee that the model will also gain, thanks to the adoption of an elongated version of that base, extra space in the cabin. Namely, as a way of securing two real seats in the back — and thus, it will also take the place of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet.
Mercedes-Benz SL hybrid plug-in is icing on the cake
With arrival at dealerships, at departure, scheduled for 2021 (presentation could take place in 2020), the new SL should also appear with a panoply of engines. If the historic model is confirmed to come under Mercedes-AMG's purview, at least three versions are expected — SL 43, SL 53, SL 63 and, oh yes, an SL 73.
THE SL 43 , will have a six in line, debiting 435 hp, with the possibility of 20 horsepower and 250 Nm extra, courtesy of an electric motor, which is part of the semi-hybrid system — a system that will be part of all versions.
THE SL 53 should see increased power to 522 hp, thanks to the use of a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8, the same engine that will equip the SL 63 , but here promising at least 612 hp of power.
However, the top of the range, in the SL family, will be the plug-in hybrid SL 73 . Version that, apparently, will resort to the same powertrain seen in the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept, that is, the combination of the twin turbo V8 that we mentioned in the SL 53 and SL 63, but combined with a 204 hp electric motor, as in the GT Concept , guarantees a maximum power of more than 800 hp, in addition to 1000 Nm of torque.
Revolutionary, and with an arsenal of technological arguments
Speaking to Automobile Magazine, engineers familiar with the intricacies of this new Mercedes-Benz SL, also assured that the model will have directional rear wheels, adjustable air suspension, active stabilizer bars, in addition to the latest generation of the 4Matic all-wheel drive system .
