Renault Kangoo and Opel Mokka put to the test by Euro NCAP

Euro NCAP has published the results of safety tests on two more vehicles: o Renault Kangoo it's the Opel Mokka . Both well-known names and both having received 100% new generations this year.

The program also took the opportunity to assign ratings to the Mercedes-Benz GLA and EQA, based on the five stars obtained by the B Class in 2019, from which they technically derive, as well as to CUPRA Leon, which received the same five stars as its “ twin brother” SEAT Leon, tested in 2020.

Regarding the two new models actually tested, both the Renault Kangoo and the Opel Mokka achieved four stars.

Euro NCAP Renault Kangoo

Renault Kangoo

In the case of the Renault Kangoo, its score was just below that needed to earn the fifth star, a consequence of the less good result achieved in some of the side impact tests.

Moving the test dummy in the opposite direction of the vehicle in the event of an impact on the far side of the vehicle revealed mediocre performance. And it also lost points for not bringing any equipment, namely, the central airbag, which prevents contact between the two front passengers in a side collision.

In the chapter of active safety, the new Renault Kangoo comes well “artillery”, bringing autonomous emergency braking systems capable of detecting not only cars, but pedestrians and cyclists, which worked correctly during the collision avoidance tests.

Opel Mokka

It is precisely in active safety that the new Opel Mokka leaves something to be desired, justifying its four-star rating. Despite being equipped with an autonomous emergency braking system, this one, however, is not capable of detecting cyclists. It doesn't help that in crash tests it doesn't also have a central airbag.

Euro NCAP reports that in any of the four rating areas, the new Opel Mokka does not achieve five stars in any of them, including child protection. The final four stars are in line with other Stellantis models based on the same CMP platform, like the Citroën C4 and ë-C4 tested last month.

“Two four-star cars, but coming from different directions. With the Kangoo, Renault has launched a respectable successor that behaves well overall, lacking only a central airbag when it comes to cutting-edge protective gear. a lower overall performance, with the new Mokka missing some critical safety systems that are increasingly common today. The new generation clearly lacks the ambition of its predecessor, which was runner-up in the "Best in Class" category in the Small Family" in 2012".
