Jaguar F-TYPE gets a new four-cylinder engine

Jaguar has just reinforced the F-TYPE range with a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. This new entry version already has prices for Portugal.

Jaguar describes it as the brand's “most dynamic, sporty and performance-focused model ever”. Description applied not to the new version of the range, but to the exclusive 400 Sport edition that stood out at the top of the F-TYPE range (not counting the R and SVR versions) for its 400 hp of power. The new version, on the other hand, stands out and surprises by the choice of an engine with just four cylinders.

War declared on the Porsche 718 Cayman

How to introduce a four-cylinder engine without detracting from the essence of a true F-TYPE? This was the challenge proposed to Jaguar engineers and they responded with the most powerful four-cylinder engine ever made by the British brand.

As Porsche did with the 718 Cayman, Jaguar did not shy away from adopting a four-cylinder turbo engine. The new Ingenium engine has 2.0 liters, 300 hp and 400 Nm, which equates to the highest specific power of any engine in the range: 150 hp per liter . In this version, with the eight-speed Quickshift (automatic) gearbox, accelerations from 0 to 100 km/h are accomplished in 5.7 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 249 km/h.

Impressive when we verify that the time from 0 to 100 km/h is exactly the same as that of the V6 (with manual transmission) which has over 40 horsepower. Unsurprisingly, this is also the most efficient version in the range, with more than a 16% improvement in fuel consumption compared to the V6 and CO2 emissions of 163 g/km on the European combined cycle.

In addition, the new engine contributes to a 52 kg reduction in the car's weight, most of them on the front axle. The lighter front allowed for a better weight distribution, now reaching a perfect 50/50. Naturally, it forced a review of the suspension calibration, as well as the electrically assisted steering. According to Jaguar, the loss of weight, and above all, where it was lost, increased the levels of agility of the feline brand sports car.

The rear of the new four-cylinder F-TYPE features a unique tailpipe, which distinguishes it from the dual and quad center tailpipes of the V6 and V8 versions, as do the 18-inch wheels. For the rest, in aesthetic terms, only the redesigned bumpers, exclusive LED headlamps, Touch Pro infotainment system and the new aluminum finishes on the interior stand out.

“Introducing our advanced four-cylinder engine to F-TYPE has created a vehicle with its own character. Performance is extraordinary for an engine of this capacity and is balanced with reduced fuel consumption and a more affordable price that make the F-TYPE experience more affordable than ever.”

Ian Hoban, Responsible for the Jaguar F-Type Production Line

The new F-TYPE is already available in Portugal from €75,473 in the convertible version and €68,323 in the coupé variant. As a final note, there are practically 23 thousand euros difference for the F-TYPE 3.0 V6 of 340 horsepower with automatic transmission.
