Model 3, Scala, Class B, GLE, Ceed and 3 Crossback. How safe are they?

In this new round of Euro NCAP crash and safety tests, highlight the Tesla Model 3 , one of the car sensation of the last years. It is not an absolute novelty, with its commercialization having started in 2017, but only this year did we see it arrive in Europe.

It is perhaps the car that has generated the most interest in recent years, so, given the opportunity to be able to properly destroy it to see how much it can protect us, Euro NCAP has not wasted it.

The tram has generated massive interest since it was announced and would be expected to appear in the Euro NCAP test rounds. Despite some differences in tests and criteria, the Tesla Model 3 had already guaranteed excellent results in North American tests, so we wouldn't be expecting any nasty surprises on this side of the Atlantic.

Thus, it is not surprising the excellent results achieved by the Model 3 — here in the Long Range version with two drive wheels — in the various tests carried out, reaching high marks in all of them.

The highlight, however, goes to the results achieved in tests of security assistants , namely autonomous emergency braking and lane maintenance. The Tesla Model 3 easily outperformed them and held the highest rating ever since Euro NCAP introduced this type of test, achieving a score of 94%.

Five stars

Predictably, the Model 3 got five stars in the overall rankings, but it wasn't the only one. Of the six models tested, also the Skoda Scala and the Mercedes-Benz Class B and GLE reached the five stars.

The Skoda Scala stands out for its high homogeneity in all results, only failing to outperform the Model 3 in tests relating to security assistants.

Both Mercedes-Benzes, despite their different typologies and masses, achieved equally high marks in the various tests. However, it is important to note that the test related to maintenance in the carriageway, where both had a less positive score.

Four stars as standard, five optional

Finally, the Kia Ceed and DS 3 Crossback were slightly below the other models tested, achieving four stars. This is due solely to the absence in the standard equipment of the driving assistants that we find as standard in the other proposals. In other words, equipment such as frontal collision warning with detection of pedestrians and/or cyclists or even autonomous emergency braking (DS 3 Crossback) must be purchased separately, in the various packages of safety equipment available.

When properly equipped, both the DS 3 Crossback and the Kia Ceed have no problems reaching five stars as we see in the rest of the models under test.
