Announced as a worthy rival, for example, of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, the Ferrari 488 Pista is basically the most recent temptation of the Cavallino Rampante brand, for those who want an approved super sports car for the day. -day, but with race car benefits. Boasting, for this, arguments worthy of the necessary… and expected!

According to data now released — finally official — by the manufacturer of Maranello, the new and more radical version of the Ferrari 488 features a revised 3.9 liter twin turbo V8, resulting in an increase in power.

(…) the biggest power increase ever for a special series car.

Twin turbo V8 with over 50 hp

Translated to kids, the most powerful V8 ever marketed by Ferrari advertises a maximum power of 720 hp , that is, 50 more than in the 488 GTB — a specific power of 185 hp/l (!). This, while it gained another 10 Nm, now announcing 770 Nm of torque.

Being a Ferrari, for another one as special as this one, the sound was given special attention. According to the Italian brand, both quality and intensity are on a higher plane than on the 488 GTB, regardless of the chosen ratio or engine speed.

More power... and less weight

In addition to the increased power, and also favoring these performances, the Ferrari 488 Pista was forced to pass through the gym, losing a total of 90 kg — the weight, empty and without fluid, is now 1280 kg — a figure that is only possible if the car comes equipped with all the available options that are lighter than the standard ones.

But even without these, it's still lighter than the 488 GTB, thanks to a lot of carbon fiber we can find in the bonnet, air filter housing, bumper and rear spoiler. As an option, 20-inch wheels can also come in this material.

The exhaust manifolds are now in Inconel — an alloy based on nickel and chromium, especially resistant to high temperatures, and enhancer of the noise produced —, the connecting rods in titanium and both the crankshaft and the flywheel were lightened.

The result of these achievements is high performance. The ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h is done in a mere 2.85 seconds and to reach 200 km/h it only takes 7.6 seconds, with the official maximum speed appearing only at 340 km/h.

closer to the road

As a result of the experience gained, both in the GTE, with the 488 GTE — champion in 2016 and 2017 — and in Formula 1, several solutions were imported from the competition to the Ferrari 488 Pista. From Formula 1 came inspiration, at the front, for some “S” ducts and diffusers, which are characterized by a ramp angle — optimized in circuit for the 488 GTE — which help to create strong suction, increasing downforce.

At the rear, the spoiler is in a higher position and is longer, with a properly optimized shape. All interventions operated on the aerodynamics of the Ferrari 488 Pista resulted in a 20% increase in the downforce value when compared to the 488 GTB.

Naturally, the chassis was not unharmed either. In order to make the car's dynamic performance at the limit easier to reach and control, Ferrari equipped the 488 Pista with the latest version of the Side-Slip Angle Control (SSC 6.0). It integrates the E-Diff3, F1-Trac systems, suspension with magnetorheological dampers (SCM) and an absolute first, the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE) — it is a software capable of managing and adjusting the pressure of the braking system in the calipers .
