Heavier and less powerful. Will the M3 Competition have a chance against the SLS AMG Black Series?

Launched almost 10 years ago (in 2013), the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series still impresses today, and not just for its "gull wing" doors.

Equipped with a 6.2 naturally-aspirated V8, Affalterbach's model was, until the arrival of the new Chevrolet Corvette Z06, the most powerful production model with the most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 in the world. It offered 631 hp and 635 Nm, numbers that allowed the SLS AMG Black Series to meet 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6s and reach a top speed of 315 km/h.

In the face of such formidable values, the BMW M3 Competition does not have "life made easy". After all, its 3.0 l twin-turbo six-cylinder doesn't go beyond 510 hp and 650 Nm. What's more, it's around 180 kg heavier.

However, its performance, despite the power deficit, is not far from those of the SLS AMG Black Series. The 100 km/h is reached in just 3.9s and the top speed is limited to the “standard” 250 km/h. Both also have rear-wheel drive and automatic transmission (eight speeds for the M3 and seven speeds for the SLS).

The numbers seem to be all on the side of the SLS AMG Black Series. Does the M3 Competition have a chance?
