In order not to miss the train of autonomous driving, there are many brands that have recently been associated with companies in the IT sector. The most recent to join this group was the Volvo who joined the NVIDIA to develop the computerized central units that will equip the brand's next generation of models.

The central computer that the two companies will develop together will be based on NVIDIA's DRIVE AGX Xavier technology and the use of this technology will allow Volvo to implement a new technologically advanced platform, the SPA 2 (Scalable Product Architecture 2). The first models of the Swedish brand to take advantage of the new technology should only reach the market at the beginning of the next decade.

This is not the first time the two companies have worked together. Last year the Volvo and the NVIDIA started a partnership to develop software systems for autonomous driving.

New platform opens the way to autonomous driving

Volvo justifies the partnership with NVIDIA with the need to increase the computerized capacity of its future models in order to move towards autonomous driving, with the aim of introducing fully autonomous vehicles onto the market within a few years.

“To introduce autonomous driving into the market, it will be necessary to increase the computerized capacity of vehicles, together with constant advances in the artificial intelligence chapter. Our agreement with NVIDIA will be an important piece of this puzzle and will help to safely introduce our customers to fully autonomous driving.”

Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.

The SPA 2 platform replaces the one used in the brand's 90 and 60 models (the SPA). Regarding the SPA, the SPA 2 brings new technologies in areas such as electrification, connectivity and autonomous driving , for which the central computer that the Swedish brand will develop together with NVIDIA has a crucial role, especially with regard to how the software updates will be carried out.
