Lyft: Uber competitor prepares tests with autonomous cars

The American giant GM is preparing to move forward with a pilot program in partnership with Lyft, which will put a fleet of new autonomous vehicles on the US roads.

In partnership with Lyft – a Californian company that, like Uber, provides transport services – General Motors announced that it will start a test phase of a new autonomous driving technology for the Chevrolet Bolt, the electric compact that will be marketed in Europe as the Opel Ampera-e.

The program starts in 2017 in a US city yet to be determined and will be based on Lyft's current service. In addition to the “normal” vehicles used by the carrier, customers will be able to request a completely autonomous car that will travel according to the instructions indicated.

NOT TO BE MISSED: Sex behind the wheel will increase with autonomous cars

However, current regulations require that all vehicles have a driver, and as such, self-contained Chevrolet Bolt models will have a person at the wheel who will only intervene in case of danger. The autonomous driving technology was purchased by GM from Cruise Automation last March for around 880 million euros.
