BMW M2 CSL: imagining the return of the Coupe Sport Lightweight

If produced, the BMW M2 CSL could be the most purist model in the Bavarian manufacturer's range.

The BMW M2 hasn't even been introduced yet – a presentation scheduled for next month – and rumors have already surfaced that the Munich-based brand may be working on an even sportier version of the M2. It will allegedly be called BMW M2 CSL and marks the return of the acronym CSL to the BMW universe.

An acronym that means Ç oupe s port L lightweight and that was born with the BMW 3.0 CSL in the 70s, with the purpose of homologating the most competitive version of the BMW E9 possible in the European Touring Car Championship. After that, the world had to wait until 2004 to see the CSL abbreviation stamped on the body of a BMW again. The model chosen for this comeback was the M3 CSL (E46). A more radical version of the 'normal' M3 with more power, less weight and more focused on performance.

The BMW M2 CSL, if produced, will certainly follow in the footsteps of its predecessors. Compared to the future BMW M2 it will be more powerful, lighter and radical in every respect. It is good that its production is confirmed… it would be a great loss, not to see a model born with these assumptions.
