Prime Minister António Costa announced this Sunday that from tomorrow, following the meeting of the European Union with the ministers of Internal Administration and Health of the European Union (EU), measures will be taken to restrict the entrances to tourism and leisure, between Portugal and Spain.

"Tomorrow, the rules will be defined that should include maintaining the free circulation of goods and guaranteeing workers' rights, but there should be a restriction for tourism or leisure purposes," said António Costa.

“We are not going to disturb the movement of goods, but there will be a control […]. Tourism will not be available between Portuguese and Spaniards in the near future,” said the prime minister, who took these decisions in coordination with his Spanish counterpart, Pedro Sánchez.

The joint decision of Portugal and Spain follows on from what has been the decision of several executives from European countries: to limit freedom of movement in the EU. A trend that has not had support from Brussels.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, argues that the best solution is health screening at the borders to deal with the covid-19 outbreak, as an alternative to closing the borders.
