That's how Nissan wants to end distractions behind the wheel

Most drivers agree that using a mobile phone while driving increases the likelihood of accidents. For Nissan, the solution is simple: a technology invented in the 19th century.

It is an increasingly common phenomenon. We are in a line of traffic, we look to the side and there is the driver with one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the cell phone. According to Nissan, one in five drivers admits using their cell phone while driving. Not anymore!

The Nissan Signal Shield is a compartment located under the armrest, a kind of “Faraday's Cage”, an invention that dates back to the 1930s. Once placed in this compartment, the mobile phone no longer has access to the telephone network, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The aim is, by ending calls and notifications, to discourage drivers from using their mobile phone while driving:

If the driver wants to connect his mobile phone to the infotainment system, he can still do so via a USB cable. To restore network connections, simply reopen the armrest normally.

For now, the Signal Shield is in the testing phase, equipped on the Nissan Juke that you can see in the images. It remains to be seen when (and if) it will reach production models.
