The national speed control system (SINCRO) should come into operation in 2015 on all highways in the country.

Jornal Sol reported today that a dozen motorways, six main and complementary routes and eight national roads throughout the country, in a total of 50 locations, will begin to be inspected within the scope of the national speed control system (SINCRO ).

Approved in 2010, SINCRO is a program within the scope of the National Road Safety Strategy, whose fundamental objective is to place Portugal among the 10 countries of the European Union with the lowest rate of road accidents, and the installation of a system of this nature was identified as a key action to achieve that goal. SINCRO corresponds to the seventh operational objective of that strategy.

The system will come into operation in 2015, after the tender for the purchase of the devices, which is ongoing. The installation of the devices will obey a rotational logic, that is, the devices will be installed in one place and can be transferred to another point of the network.
