Is it the end of the line for the Mercedes-Benz SLC?

Strategic change in the Stuttgart brand. The success of SUVs and the arrival of new models in the range puts at risk not only the Mercedes-Benz SLC but other niche models in the brand.

As we have mentioned before, Mercedes-Benz and BMW announced that their endless expansion of models, filling all possible and imaginary market segments and niches, would be about to end. At least in part.

The popularization of SUVs and crossovers, and the imminent arrival of purely electric vehicles, independent of the current manufacturers' ranges, leaves less room in the market for other types. Especially those that already meant few volumes, that is, coupé and cabrio.

It is in this context that the first casualty appears. The Mercedes-Benz SLC, born SLK, will not have a successor, according to Automobile Magazine. The smallest roadster of the «star brand» thus seems to reach the end of the line, after more than 20 years in production, over three generations.

And the reason should not stop there, as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé and Cabrio could have an identical fate. If the end of these two models comes to fruition, it will lead to a repositioning – upwards – of the other Mercedes-Benz coupé and convertibles (Class C and Class E).

VOLVO'S 90 YEARS SPECIAL: Volvo is known for building safe cars. Why?

On the other hand, the Mercedes-Benz SL, the most emblematic roadster of the German brand, is to continue. Its successor, scheduled for 2020, will be “paired” with the successor of the Mercedes-AMG GT. A new platform is being developed that will equip the next generations of both models. In order not to step on the GT Roadster's heels, the future SL should gain a 2+2 configuration, eliminating the metallic roof, returning to the more traditional canvas hood.

If the Mercedes-Benz SLC will be the most likely casualty, the number of models in the brand will continue to grow in the coming years. Otherwise let's see:

  • The Class X pick-up, an unprecedented proposal for the brand;
  • EQ, the sub-brand that will give rise to a range of 100% electric models, starting with a crossover;
  • A new saloon, derived from the second generation of the Class A (anticipated in Shanghai) and distinct from the CLA;
  • GLB, a second crossover derived from the Class A.

In other words, if on the one hand we will see the extinction of some models, this does not imply that the number of models in the brand's catalog will decrease, on the contrary. The new models planned should offer a more attractive mix between sales volume and profitability.
