Why did the Polestar 1's roof explode during a crash test?

Swedish brands are known for one thing: safety. Whatever the brand, from Saab to Volvo via the new Polestar , the focus on occupant safety is a must in cars made in Scandinavian lands.

So it's no wonder Polestar is taking crash testing very seriously. However, there was something that stood out in the Polestar 1 crash-test video. The brand installed a plate with small explosives on the roof of its model and when there is a collision, they explode without anyone realizing why they are there.

To answer these questions, Road & Track contacted Polestar. The Swedish brand explained that the explosives installed on the plate were connected to various sensors inside the car (the airbag, for example) and are used for engineers to understand when each device is activated in the event of an accident (whenever this happens, the small explosive is detonated).

These pre-series models are used for the brand to smooth the edges that still remain before the model reaches the stands. The Polestar 1 is a plug-in hybrid with 600 hp and 1000 Nm of torque, managing to travel around 150 km in 100% electric mode.
