The most prestigious example of the “Gullwing Racer”, conducted by Stirling Moss, has been immaculately restored and will be available for auction as early as next month.

Manufactured in 1955, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Racer W198 is one of four models produced exclusively by the German brand for competition events, having been driven by Sir Stirling Moss, the famous British motorist, on the “Tour de France Automobile” in 1956.

For these reasons it is not surprising that it is one of the most sought after Mercedes by collectors, also due to the “gull wings”, the doors with an unconventional but very popular format.

Since 1966, this Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Racer has been owned by the same owner and more recently by his son, who inherited it after his father's death. The car's restoration process took about 3 years and returned it to its original shape, as you can see from the photos below.

According to Sports Car Market magazine, the most expensive “Gullwing Racer” sold for $4.62 million in 2012. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Racer is now expected to break that record and be sold by auction house RM Sotheby's for roughly $6 million. The auction takes place on December 10th in New York, but the most curious can see the car on display on the 5th and 6th of the same month.
